If you’ve been looking to have a pool installed lately you’ve probably been wondering if it should be above ground or below ground. Every back garden deserves a swimming pool especially if you have kids, it’s perfect to keep them busy during the summer months. And it’s perfect alongside a summer BBQ on a late Saturday afternoon while the cricket is on.
It can be difficult to decide between the two options but we’ve done all the work for you, all you have to do is see which one is better for you and then decide.
Cost
The first thing anyone ever looks at is the cost involved. This one factor can usually be the deciding factor when it comes to a decision.
A below ground swimming pool is going to cost a lot more than an above ground one. Simply because it has a lot more labour involved. If you opt for a low end below ground swimming pool you could actually be getting a top of the range above ground pool and still have money left to spruce up the garden a bit.
This decision all comes down to taste, needs and what you can afford.
Durability
When it comes to lasting power the below ground swimming pool wins by a long shot. If it’s made from fibreglass it could well last longer than 20 years. Concrete will last anything from 9 to 13 years and vinyl 6 to 11 years.
An above ground swimming pool will last between 7 and 15 years before it will eventually give out.
Maintenance
There is really no difference when it comes to maintenance. If there is a deck, however, it can become a little more difficult.
Safety
If you have kids that aren’t at the age where they are swimming yet but running around the garden then safety is definitely of the utmost importance.
Above ground pools basically already have a wall that will keep the kids out.
Below ground swimming pools, however, are responsible for more than half of fatal drownings. This can be overcome by putting a fence around the pool or having a strong safety net pulled over it, so there won’t be any accidents.
The Look
When it comes to customization below ground pools win by a long shot because of all the different shapes the pools come in.
Above ground swimming pools only come in a limited assortment of models and are quite boring when comparing them to the above ground pools.
Aesthetic
It goes without saying that below ground swimming pools are a lot more easier on the eyes than an above ground swimming pool.
You can, however, make an above ground pool look spectacular if you take the money you saved from not opting for a below ground pool and do some incredible landscaping around it. Making it look like an oasis in your backyard.
Temporary or Permanent
If you’re looking for a temporary solution to a very hot summer than an above ground swimming pool is what you’re looking for. You can sit in it to cool down and the kids will love to splash around in it.
A below ground swimming pool is long-term and will be there to stay, and if you look after it will keep you cool for many years to come.
Personal Preference
At the end of the day it really all comes down to personal preference. No-one knows more than you about what you want.
If you take all these factors into consideration you will definitely come to a conclusion on what type of swimming pool will work for your circumstances.
